MODE/IQ - Mind/Soul mLP
Here is a mysterious mini-LP from a New York band called Mode/IQ. I can find no info on these guys aside from what is on the jacket and insert. They only list their first names on the sleeve, which certainly does not help. The only info I found is that the producer and engineer, Albert Garzon, is the person who wrote all the songs & played synths on the Evening in Torpor LP that I posted a while back. So, that's kinda interesting. And apparently this band has some other releases out there (live tapes and some singles and EPs, but I don't know if those are on vinyl or cassette), but this is the only one that I have found online. As far as the music, it sort of combines electropop with the downtown-NYC punk funk sound (Del-Byzanteens, Bush Tetras, etc). Definitely a good record, and I personally would be interested in hearing more from them if anyone has anything...

Very cool sounds indeed:)
This makes now the second time a mention of it I have seen. IF you have, could you please post "Friz Be-Hmmmm?" I would really like to hear this, and it was supposedly going to be posted at mutant sounds like 5 months ago. So, it wouldn't be stepping on toes if you went ahead and did it:)
GrEeeAaat Sound. Deixa-me falar em Português, não conhecia e fiquei absolutamente contente " I Translate .. I don't know this band. but surely is the better thing i listen in a recent time.
Love it, thanks!
my name is gabe chiarello, i play in a pop punk band called the creetons from asbury park nj. this is my dad's band. his name is lucian chiarello. i have hundreds of these mini lps along with some 45s. its awsome that you have this stuff up.
Thanks for posting this & ripping the tracks to MP3, goutroy.
I played drums & drum machine on this record and was a member of Mode/IQ '83-'84.
It's cool to hear these tracks again - brings back fond memories of working with Nicky, Lucien, & Steven.
Gabe: tell your dad I said hey.
best,

say hello to eilene staple. we were so very young in those days. was listening to miles davis, steve wonder, and a small slice of anathallo when i got a thought. google mode/IQ. here we are. i still have rehersal photos on long island, and concert photos from CBGB, and where ever else you guys played. get in touch with me and i can work something out. great to learn your musicial talents are being continued til this day. internet has made this little ball such a fun place, finding old relationships.
I used to listen to Mode/IQ back in 84 or 85 when was in High School in Champaign. IL. I had this mini LP but it got lost in the shuffle and i have been trying to track it down for many many years. Unfortunately I found nothing at all on the internet, until today when i found your blog! Thank you so much for posting this and sharing the tunes, and giving new life to Mode/IQ on the net. I will be recommending these tunes to my friends who are really into music but weren't even born when Mode/IQ was around. Thanks again!
the guitarists name is lucian, i know this because i am in a band with his son, who plays drums. this band was awesome, we listen to their music alot.
This is very refreshing and also relaxing. Thank you for posting it.
There is a primitive use of scratching in the first track that is endearing. Quite a document from the time.
I was just in the process of converting my vinyl and pulled out a mini-EP of Mode/IQs that contains (Confidence,The Big Screen, and Summit). I purchased it from them when played the Brighton Bar in Long Branch, NJ back in 1983 or '84. They put ona great show and they were a nice group of guys. Glad to see there's others that are still appreciating the music after all these years. Their sound on "Confidence" reminds me of some Jah Wobble and Holger Czukay Snake Charmer stuff.
I worked on a few Mode I/Q projects in the early 80s, this may be one, Claude Achille us3cfa@gmail.com
hello, i would like to read more information about this interesting topic.
Great music!
this is awesome, great idea! Beautiful blog with nice informational content. Thanks Very much!
Wow.. cool stuff. I am Walter. "the wal" The original MODE/IQ drummer. 1981-1983. Great times, with cool dudes. A7 club and A7 annex were especially wild shows. Broken bottles and broken arms were everywhere. We could not play one show because the club had been busted for gambling, heroin and gun possesion. The CBGBs show opening for Sonic Youth was special. Brighton bar, Montclair College, the Asbury park shows, oh my... BTW .. While I was in MODE/IQ, we wrote all the songs, not the producer. My favorites songs were Coward and Lonely Streetwalker. Those were the days when the East village was the East Village.
Just spotted this record at Groovy Graveyard in Asbury Park.
